About Doctoral and Masters Degrees by research

REGISTRATION FOR A DOCTORAL OR MASTERS RESEARCH DEGREE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF RWANDA (UR)
The University of Rwanda offers Research Degrees leading to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters by Research as provided for by the Law establishing the University.

A. ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF RWANDA PH.D DEGREES
The University of Rwanda was established by Rwandan Law No. 71/2013 of 10/09/2013 published in the Official Gazette n° 38 of 23/09/2013 as a merger of the following 7 Rwanda Public Higher Learning Institutions (HLI):
1. National University of Rwanda (NUR) , created in 1963
2. Institut Supérieur d’Agriculture et d’Elevage (ISAE) in English Higher Institute of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry , created in 1989
3. Kigali Health Institute (KHI), created in 1996
4. Kigali Institute of Science And Technology (KIST), created in 1997,
5. Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), created in 1999,
6. School of Finance And Banking (SFB), created in 2002,
7. Umutara Polytechnic (UP), created in 2006.

The seven institutions were disestablished by the same law.

By Article 4 of the law, UR is comprised of the following six colleges:
1. College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences(CAVM)
2. College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS)
3. College of Business and Economics (CBE)
4. College of Education (CE)
5. College of Medicine and Health Sciences(CMHS)
6. College of Science and Technology (CST)

UR has inherited all the academic programmes that existed at the merged previous HLI’s including PhD and Masters by Research with 46 students registered for PhD and MPhil at different stages of their studies. In August 2014, UR conferred degrees to its first two PhD graduates.
B. OFFERINGS
UR offers PhD and Masters by research in the following disciplines, depending on availability of facilities and supervisors:

Currently UR has students registered for PhD and Masters by Research who are at various stages of their studies in the following disciplines: Social Sciences, Linguistics and Languages, Clinical Psychology, Pharmacy, Medicine, Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Social Statistics, Geography (climate change), Environmental Chemistry, Management, and Economics
