"Dr. Hussen Abdu Muhidin (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer of Human Anatomy with over 17 years of academic, teaching, research, and leadership experience in medical and health sciences education across Ethiopia and Rwanda. He is currently affiliated with the University of Rwanda, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Department of Anatomy, Huye Campus.
Dr. Muhidin holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human Anatomy from Addis Ababa University, with specialized expertise in reproductive and developmental toxicology, teratology, histology, embryology, and gross anatomy. His doctoral research focused on the two-generation reproductive toxicity and teratogenic effects of Moringa stenopetala, reflecting his strong interest in experimental anatomy, toxicology, and evidence-based evaluation of medicinal plants.
In addition to his PhD, he earned an MSc in Human Anatomy, a BSc in Nursing, and a Higher Diploma in Teaching in Higher Education (HDP). He has also completed advanced professional training in English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) through the U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa Regional English Language Office, strengthening his capacity to teach and mentor in international academic environments.
Dr. Muhidin has extensive experience teaching gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and clinical anatomy to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including medical, dental, surgery residents, and paramedical programs. He has contributed to anatomy education in several public and private universities in Ethiopia and currently teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University of Rwanda.
He has played a major role in curriculum development and evaluation, including serving as Chair of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences Curriculum Committee, and actively participating in medical curriculum design and revision. His teaching excellence has been recognized repeatedly through student and institutional awards.
Dr. Muhidin is a highly productive researcher with an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized journals such as BMC, PLOS ONE, PLOS Global Public Health, Cancer Causes & Control, Phytomedicine Plus, Translational Research in Anatomy, and SAGE Open Medicine. His research spans such as human and experimental anatomy, reproductive and developmental toxicology, maternal and child health, nutrition and growth outcomes, stroke and neurological disorders and systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
He has successfully completed nationally funded research projects, including fully supported studies by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, and has received advanced training in systematic review and meta-analysis, STATA, structural equation modeling (SEM), research ethics, and grant writing.
Dr. Muhidin has supervised 19 Doctor of Dental Medicine graduates at Atlas College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He has served extensively as an external examiner for pre-clinical and medical qualification examinations at multiple universities, including Addis Ababa University, University of Gondar, Jimma University, Bahir Dar University, Arsi University, Debre Markos University, and Dilla University.
Dr. Muhidin has held multiple senior academic and administrative leadership roles, including Vice Dean at Bethel Medical College, Addis Ababa; Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Head of the Pre-clerkship Department at Wollo University; Unit Leader of the Anatomy Unit; and Research Officer at the Ethiopian One Health Research and Training Institute (EOHRTI), Wollo University, Dessie, Ethiopia.
He currently serves as Vice President of the Anatomical Society of Ethiopia (ASE) and has long-standing involvement in national academic committees, quality assurance bodies, research budget allocation panels, and health sciences coordination forums.
Dr. Muhidin has completed extensive professional development in leadership, governance, pedagogy, research ethics, clinical research, infection prevention, and One Health approaches, supported by institutions such as USAID, WHO, Jhpiego, CDC, and the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health.
His contributions to teaching, curriculum innovation, faculty development, and community health initiatives have been recognized through multiple institutional awards from Wollo University and partner institutions.
