Shema Emmanuel

Emmanuel Shema is lecturer at the University of Rwanda, College of Arts and Social Sciences, Centre for Conflict Management. He is also a PhD student at Moi University (Kenya), in the School of Education. He is specialising in Educational Communication and Technology (ECT). He has been involved in the university education as both a lecturer and an administrator since 2006. Emmanuel holds a Master’s degree in Social and Education Research Methods from the former Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), Rwanda and a Bachelor’s degree (Hons.) in Education from the former National University of Rwanda (NUR), Rwanda. In 2013, both KIE and NUR were merged with other public higher learning institutions to form the current University of Rwanda (UR). Emmanuel has attended a number of trainings, seminars and conferences on research in public and population health, educational management, pedagogy in public and population health, education and social sciences. Prior to consecrating full time to his PhD training Emmanuel served as the Academic Registrar of former NUR, Academic Registrar of UR Huye Campus, and the College Registrar of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) of UR, respectively. Prior to these positions, he had worked, respectively, as an Assistant Lecturer and Assistant Researcher at the Centre of Conflict Management (CCM) of NUR. Before joining NUR, he was the Principal of Ruyumba Secondary School, in Rwanda. Emmanuel’s research interests include ICT integration in education in general, and in health education and promotion in particular. He focuses on sexual and reproductive health education, women’s sexual and reproductive rights, and youth’s health information seeking behaviour, and media and information literacy. In addition, he has research interests in the use of ICT and new digital media in education for peace and conflict prevention and management. Emmanuel believes that education is an invaluable gift we can offer to our children and humanity in general. Since we live in a world which is becoming more and more digital, he advocates that educators should help learners and young people acquire ICT, digital and media literacy skills so that they can build their own knowledge and take informed decisions about their health, life, environment and their society at large. Emmanuel Shema is a member OSSREA (Organisation of Social Science Research in East Africa), Rwanda Chapter. He loves reading, scientific documentaries, jogging and football.
