MUGUNGA Canisius Patrick is an employee in the College of Agriculture,
Forestry and Food Science at the University of Rwanda.
His background is forestry and he has a PhD in Agroforestry from Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He also holds MSc in Forest Science and an Honours BSc in Community Forestry both from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He holds a BSc (Forestry) from Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania and a Diploma (Forestry) from Olmotonyi Forestry Training Institute, Arusha, Tanzania. Prof. Mugunga has been an academic staff since April 2005 in the then National University of Rwanda and continued until to date in the University of Rwanda from its establishment in 2013. Before that he worked as the head of Nyagatare Research Station of the then “Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Rwanda, ISAR”, a National Agricultural Research Institute. From 1995-2003, he was the head of Tree Seed Centre and Forest Genetic Resource programme both constituting a research programme of ISAR based in Ruhande Arboretum, Huye district, Rwanda. Prof. Mugunga has been involved in/or affiliated to a number of organizations, including: member of the RIO Conventions National Committee in Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA); National Designated Authority for the control of Forestry Reproductive Material moving in International Trade in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Scheme; country focal Point for the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI); Country representative in the Eastern African Plant Genetic Resources Network (EAPGREN) and member of EAPGREN’s Regional Steering Committee; and country representative in the Agroforestry Research Network for Africa – Eastern and Central Africa (AFRENA – ECA) and member of AFRENA’s Regional Steering Committee. His PhD Thesis was entitled “The use of eucalypts in Rwandan agroforestry systems: to integrate or disintegrate?”, MSc Thesis ws on “Seed source variation: Assessment of potential to improve plantation forestry in Rwanda.” Prof Mugunga is the UR-CAFF’s focal point in the Sustainable Forestry and Efficient Renewable Energy for improved livelihood (SFERE) Project”. The latter works in partnership with the UR-CAFF on Eucalyptus macro- and micro=propagation of tree planting material to foster reforestation and biomass productivity for improving planation capacity to capture more carbon for climate change mitigation. Prof Mugunga supervises postgraduates (currently 6 PhD candidates) and has many publications. "
