Brief profile:
Dr. Emmanuel Iyamuremye (PhD) is a researcher, mathematician, and mathematics educator. Mathematics is often seen as a universal language, yet many students face barriers like anxiety and self-doubt that hinder their engagement and success. My research focuses on teaching and learning mathematics through active instructional approaches that foster positive emotions and motivation. I aim to bridge achievement gaps among underserved populations by examining the role of social identities. Looking forward, I plan to investigate students' perceptions of mathematics, exploring why some believe they are "not math people" while others do. I am particularly interested in how these beliefs intersect with social identities to shape motivation and achievement. My work seeks to create equitable learning environments that empower all students to succeed in mathematics. My research interests include contributing to the development of teaching practices that make mathematics more accessible, engaging, and successful for students, especially those in under-resourced and rural environments, with a focus on alleviating students’ negative emotions and boosting their motivation and academic success. By concentrating on these aspects, I aspire to advance educational strategies that can transform mathematics learning and significantly impact students’ academic trajectories.
