"Associate Professor Innocent Muhire holds a PhD in Environmental Management from the University of Johannesburg, with research on climate change impacts on agricultural productivity in Rwanda. He also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental Management and advanced training in GIS, Remote Sensing, and sustainable development, providing a strong foundation in climate resilience, environmental planning, and sustainable resource management.
With over twenty years in higher education, Dr. Muhire is an Associate Professor and Leader of the Geography Section at the University of Rwanda–College of Education. He has taught and supervised postgraduate students and led more than 40 consultancies for national and international organizations, including REMA, FONERWA, UNICEF, IUCN, GIZ, Enabel, and the Green Climate Fund. His work spans climate risk and vulnerability assessments, biodiversity conservation, integration of national climate commitments into local development strategies, and multi-level stakeholder engagement.
Recent projects include leading a climate risk assessment for Rwanda’s education sector, evaluating the Nyandungu Wetland Eco-tourism Park, and supporting NDC integration into district plans. Associate Professor, Muhire has strong leadership in managing multi-sectoral projects, coordinating expert teams, and developing training and monitoring frameworks. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to secondary school geography textbooks widely used in Rwanda, demonstrating his commitment to research, capacity building, and environmental education"
